Question:
Why do I have to fill out a medical history form when visiting the dentist?

Answer:
Researchers and physicians have finally realized that the health of one's mouth is directly connected to the health of one's body. Unfortunately, however, your medical and dental records are not connected, which means if you're taking a medication that thins the blood in preparation for open heart surgery, your dentist may not know this crucial information. One way dentists can glean information about your medical history is to have you fill out a medical history form each time you visit the dentist.

Your dentist needs to know the medications you're taking, whether or not you have sinus infections, if you've had surgery recently, or if you're being treated for sleep apnea, heart disease and diabetes. If you're a woman, it's especially important that your dentist know if you're pregnant -- or planning on becoming pregnant, as gum disease can lead to miscarriages, preeclampsia and low birth weight babies.

For more information on the connection between your mouth and whole body health, please download my free e-book, "Keep Your Body Healthy . . . Brush Your Teeth!" It's filled with lots of great information and explains why your toothbrush is your #1 weapon in keeping your body healthy!
